ENVIRONMENT

  • Helped lead the successful fight to prevent oil drilling in the Santa Monica Bay. Nanette worked with grassroots community activists to soundly defeat Measure O at the ballot box despite a multimillion-dollar campaign by oil companies. In recognition of her work, Nanette was honored by Heal the Bay and Sierra Club with one of their 2015 political leadership awards on the environment.
  • Supported and developed plan for municipal carbon neutrality planning and tracking to address climate change, rising sea levels, and air pollution.
  • Prioritized implementation measures in the Municipal Carbon Neutral Plan based on cost-effectiveness and greenhouse gas reduction potential. Supported the goal of achieving carbon neutrality for municipal facilities and operations by 2020.
  • Developed community and municipal reduction measures for the energy efficiency chapter of
  • The Climate Action Plan. High-level recommendations for reducing carbon emissions from the community and municipal facilities and operations to achieve statewide 2020 greenhouse gas reduction targets.
  • Implemented water conservation efforts that lead to achieving a mandated 25% state-wide reduction.
  • Lead fight to pass ban on single-use carryout bags and established environmental compliance. Action resulted in reduction in the number of plastic bags that potentially end up in storm drains and the Pacific Ocean.
  • Supported local efforts to determine the feasibility of Community Choice power to supply cleaner, locally produced, lower cost energy to communities.
  • Supported efforts to move toward city assessing cost and benefits to invest in solar.
  • Partnered with Heal the Bay, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Surfrider to Hold an Environmental Forum Featuring Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to Discuss Potential Impacts of Oil Drilling Into the Santa Monica Bay to Highlight Dangers of a Proposed Oil Drilling Project.
  • Increased use of electric vehicles and increased number of fast charging electric stations in parking lots.

EDUCATION

  • Supported a partnership with STAR Education, Inc. to provide before- and after-school enrichment programming for kindergartners as well as a wider variety of enrichment programming to children of all ages in the community during after-school hours.
  • Expanded the P.A.R.K. after-school program to accommodate a greater number of children.

QUALITY OF LIFE

  • Approved and funded improvements to South Park to bring more recreational opportunities to the community. Park improvements included a two to five year-old play area as well as a six to twelve year-old play area, both accessible for children of all abilities. Plans also enhanced the community garden.
  • Supported community revitalization plans to increase more bike lanes and walkable streets.
  • Welcomed and hosted Special Olympics delegations from Belize and Belgium.
  • Supported new city events such as World Cup Viewing Parties, Shark Week, and CrossFit Summer Games to attract more families, create more recreational opportunities, and increase economic development.

BUDGET

  • Balanced $40 million dollar budget that resulted in a surplus.
  • Adopted priority based budgeting to allow for better budget decisions.
  • Lead effort to increase street re-pavement budget by 20% to improve city streets.
  • Advocated safe streets to school projects to add sidewalks to increase pedestrian safety.
  • Lead the fight to save tens of thousands of dollars in wasteful spending by cutting a $10,000 per month public relations contract.
  • Lead the charge for an open bidding process for new city prosecutor services resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings.
  • Supported pro-business climate by installing smart parking meters, expanding retail sales areas in downtown, and reducing regulations for retail auto sales.
  • Helped create an online portal for resident feedback and complaints to more efficiently deliver issues to city staff for response and follow-up and to improve city services for residents.

PUBLIC SAFETY

  • Approved hundreds of thousands of dollars in crime prevention measures including hiring more police officers and installing security cameras.
  • Reduced crime and public drunkenness during July Fourth holiday.
  • Installed new training facility to reduce officer-involved shootings. Training enhances police officers’ judgment and decision-making skills during low frequency, high-risk situations such as active shooters.
