Congresswoman Debbie Dingell Endorses Nanette Barragán in CA-44 Primary
SAN PEDRO, CA – Today, Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) endorsed Nanette Barrágan for Congress in the Democratic primary in California’s 44th District. Congresswoman Dingell is an active member of the DCCC Women Lead program.
“Congresswoman Dingell and I believe in doing more to support women and children in our communities and I am honored to have her endorsement in this race,” said Barrágan. “While a lot of politicians talk about working to help middle class families, there are very few who understand what that really means. Helping families means erasing gender inequity in hiring and pay and giving all of our children an equal shot at success by providing them with quality early learning and educational opportunities, just to name a few. Congresswoman Dingell gets that and I look forward to working with her to deliver real results, not just rhetoric, when it comes to supporting middle class families.”
During her career Nanette Barrágan has been a passionate advocate for women, children, and families. She has worked with victims of domestic violence to help them obtain restraining orders against their abusers, she has worked with special needs students to help make sure they receive the individualized education they require, and she has been a fierce advocate for keeping families healthy by protecting the air we breathe and the water we drink from polluters. Congresswoman Dingell is a nationally recognized advocate for women and children. She successfully fought to have women included in federally-funded health research, and advocated for greater awareness of issues directly related to women’s health, including breast cancer and women’s heart health.
“Now, more than ever, we need people like Nanette Barrágan in Congress,” said Congresswoman Dingell. “Women, children, and families seem to be under constant attack from those who claim to be acting in their best interests. We need fighters who will protect our environment for our families, and promote women’s health. I know that Nanette understands what’s at stake. She has a track record of getting things done in a productive, positive way and I am proud to endorse her campaign to represent the people of California’s 44th District.”
Barragán, the daughter of immigrants from Mexico, grew up in Carson and the surrounding areas where she attended Stephen M. White Middle School, learned to swim at Carson Pool, and studied at the Carson Library. She worked her way through UCLA and law school at USC before becoming a long-time advocate for the environment and the first elected Latina member of the Hermosa Beach City Council. She was also a leader in the fight against Measure O, a ballot measure that would have allowed oil companies to drill for oil in the Santa Monica Bay.
