SAN PEDRO, CA – Today, Nanette Barragán, congressional candidate for CA-44, released a statement commenting on the House’s rejection of President Obama’s Pacific Rim free trade initiative.

“Supporting smart, progressive trade policies will ensure that we remain competitive in the global economy. We need to think about what is best for our country and our workers and unfortunately this deal does not do that, which is why I am opposed to it.”

“Policies don’t have to come at the expense of workers and their families, the people that Congressmen and women are elected to serve. In Congress, I will work to come to an agreement that has the highest labor standards possible, protections for Californians and workers throughout the country and training opportunities for the jobs of the future.”

“This is a crucial issue that affects our country that my opponent in the CA-44 race, State Senator Isadore Hall, has yet to comment on. Every Democrat running for Congress should stand up and say where they would be on big trade votes like these.”

Barragán, the daughter of immigrants from Mexico, grew up in Carson and the surrounding areas where she attended Stephen M. White Middle School, learned to swim at Carson Pool, and studied at the Carson Library. She worked her way through UCLA and law school at USC before becoming a long-time advocate for the environment and the first elected Latina member of the Hermosa Beach City Council. She was also a leader in the fight against Measure O, a ballot measure that would have allowed oil companies to drill for oil in the Santa Monica Bay.
