Nanette Barragán Releases Statement on the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

SAN PEDRO, CA – Nanette Barragán, Congressional candidate in CA-44, released a statement on the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act:

“I have a clear memory as a child watching my mom studying for her U.S. citizenship exam.  She was so proud the day she passed that test, and one thing in particular she took very seriously as a new citizen was her right to vote.  I know it’s easy to take that right for granted, but it’s something my mom taught me to treasure and protect.  The Voting Rights Act of 1965, which today celebrates its 50th anniversary, was designed to make sure that no eligible voter is ever deprived of his or her right to vote based on the color of their skin, their zip code, or their financial status.  As an attorney volunteering with the Obama voter protection team in Florida in 2012, I saw firsthand the lengths some people will go to violate those rights.  It was inexcusable.  Every eligible person deserves the opportunity to have a voice in our democracy, and as a Member of Congress I will never waver in my commitment to protecting our right to vote.”
